Lippy Kids (Elbow)

Stephen Berry - Lippy Kids (Elbow) by StephenBerry

Elbow. One of the best bands today. If you haven't heard them, I urge you to check out their Mercury Prize winning album "The Seldom Seen Kid," especially if you can find the videos for their live performance at Abbey Road with the BBC Orchestra. Fantastic. Anyway, this is the title track, so to speak, of their new album, "Build A Rocket Boys!" about the grandness and promises and innocence of childhood. I have not the silky-smooth voice of Guy Garvey, but then again, no one does. Also, I'm not from Manchester...

(whistle, whistle)

Coney Island (Good Old War)

Stephen Berry - Coney Island (Good Old War) by StephenBerry

Good Old War is a fun little band from Philadelphia. Their sound is just like sitting around a campfire with acoustic guitars and marshmallows. This particular song probably has more meaning for the guy that wrote it (I've never been to Coney Island), but it's a blast to play and sing. I will say it has some personal meaning to me, too... love/hate relationships with all the various places I've lived, etc... Enjoy.

Pardon Me (Larry Norman)

Stephen Berry - Pardon Me (Larry Norman) by StephenBerry

"Pardon Me" appears on the album "Only Visiting This Planet." For those of you who don't know, Larry Norman was one of the greatest songwriters ever. He passed away in 2008. I don't think this is a very popular song of his, but I've always liked the sound of it.

Swallowed In The Sea (Coldplay)

Stephen Berry - Swallowed In The Sea (Coldplay) by StephenBerry

Ok, so I'm not a big Coldplay fan, really... but they have some gems. This song is one that I like to play quite often because, like any Coldplay song, it's incredibly simple and can be played either cheerfully of sadly. This is definitely a mellow version. And even though this is just for fun, I feel I must apologize for my lack of falsetto chops...

Harmless Sparks (David Bazan)

Harmless Sparks (David Bazan) by StephenBerry

Yes, it's David Bazan week (I guess?) here on Toofer Toosday. Here's a song from his solo album "Curse Your Branches." This is a most interesting tune, with some thought-provoking lyrics that can be interpreted in the myriad of ways, especially in light of the spiritual journey Bazan himself was going through at the time of writing this.

I won't post my personal thoughts on what it all means (that's not the point of this space), but take a listen and ponder it yourself, perhaps...

Slow Car Crash (Headphones)

Slow Car Crash (Headphones) by StephenBerry

This is the sad, closing song from David Bazan's side-project, Headphones
. It could be simply a description of a rainy-day car crash, though it also could be speaking about the slow, unavoidable end of a relationship. Either way, be careful out there, kids.
